Fish Oil Psoriasis Treatment

Fish oil psoriasis benefits may be related to the anti-inflammatory effect of Fish oil.

The special Omega-3 fats content of Fish oil is known to reduce any abnormal inflammation in our bodies, including the inflammation connected with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis.

Inflammation is one of the main mechanisms of psoriasis.

With psoriasis the T cells - special cells of the immune system, which attack the virus or bacteria invaders in our body - by mistake become too active; they trigger the abnormal inflammation and autoimmune aggression, which damages the "good" skin cells and causes the development of the psoriatic plaques, or damages the joints and causes the development of the psoriatic arthritis.

The external psoriasis treatments, which work due to their ability to reduce the inflammation by inhibiting the T cells are: Corticosteroids, Anthralin, Sunlight and UVB tanning beds. Internal psoriasis treatments which reduce the inflammation include biologics (Enbrel and others).

Fish oil psoriasis remedies may also work for psoriasis due to improving the overall health of the person with psoriasis.

Fish oils reduce psoriasis symptoms

SHEFFIELD, UNITED KINGDOM. Psoriasis is a relatively common skin disorder that affects between one and two per cent of the population. Itching, scaling, and erythema (abnormal flushing of the skin) are common features. Abnormal levels of leukotrienes (metabolites of arachidonic acid) are believed to be involved in the development and progression of the disorder. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a major component of fish oils, is known to dampen the adverse effects of leukotrienes and has been proven to have significant anti-inflammatory effects.

Medical doctors at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital have just released the results of a clinical trial designed to evaluate the effects of oral supplementation with fish oils in the treatment of psoriasis. The 28 patients involved in the trial had all been diagnosed with chronic psoriasis. They were randomized into two groups with one group receiving 10 fish oil capsules (containing 1.8 grams of EPA) and the other group receiving 10 olive oil capsules every day for the duration of the 12-week trial. After 8 weeks of treatment there was a significant reduction in itching, erythema and scaling in the fish oil group and a trend towards a decrease in the surface area of skin affected by the disease. No significant changes occurred in the placebo group. The researchers conclude that fish oil supplementation is useful in the treatment of psoriasis particularly when itching is a major problem. fischöl psoriasis

Omega-3 fish oil and skin health

The physiological changes and various characteristics of essential fatty acid (EFA) deficit with respect to our skin are numerous. Deficits have been shown to lead to dysfunctions in the skin barrier, inflammatory responding, and cellular signaling. Several clinical disorders such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and acne have also been linked to EFA deficits (Wright, 1989). Furthermore, new and exciting research suggests that increasing dietary EFAs rejuvenates the look of our skin and can prevent both chronological and sun-damage induced signs of aging.

Fish oil and wrinkle prevention
Research suggests that the youthfulness of skin can be maintained with fish oil, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Fish oil has been found to be effective in reducing photoageing (especially elastosis), wrinkle formation and is also beneficial in preventing chronological ageing, such as thinning of the skin (Kim et al., 2005).
Aging of the skin is attributed to both intrinsic aging (chronological) and extrinsic aging (sundamage). Naturally aged skin is pale, smooth and has fine wrinkles, where as photoaged skin is coarsely wrinkled and is associated with yellowing of the skin, laxity, and a leathery dry appearance (Gilchrest, 1989). Studies have suggested that collagen alteration is the major cause of extrinsic aging (Fisher et al., 1997).

Protection from the sun’s ultraviotlet radiation (UV)is very important for preventing premature aging. Ultraviolet radiation damages skin by activating proteins in the skin which generate reactive oxygen species leading to collagen degradation. Once photo aging has occurred, skin appears coarse with deep wrinkles. Luckily, EPA diminishes the UV induced damage to our skin which helps maintain a youthful appearance (Sies & Stahl, 2004).

A great book is the Ultramind Solution by Dr. Mark Hyman. He has lots of stuff on Omega 3. Also he had a recommendation that you put your pills in the freezer. The frozen pill will pass into the small intestine before breaking down; and should help with any fishy burps. Thanks for your hub.
